Annotation to the concept of the new hospital building for 360 beds
for Children’s Hospital ¹2 of Saint Maria Magdalene,
58.1, 1-st Line, Vasilievsky Island, St.Petersburg.
Description of the Construction Site
The site for the projected construction of the hospital building is located in Vasileostrovsky administrative district, in 1-st Line.
The site borders on
- party walls of residential buildings in 2-nd Line (from the South)
- 2-nd Line alley (from the East)
- Magdalene Lane on the grounds of the hospital and a single-storey Admission Department building, former stables and sheds, “letter B”, built in 1836-57 (from the North)
- two-storey building of laboratories and administrative department (from the West)

There is empty space, where summer hospital tents were located at the end of XIX century; at present it is being used for utility needs.
There is also an unused boiler-house (to be demolished) and a transformer substation building (under reconstruction).
All the hospital buildings registered by the State Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage will be preserved. The engineering service systems will be removed out of the site, and several poplar-trees will have to be felled. There is a courtyard in the adjoining site in 2-nd Line.
The site for the hospital building project is located in a quiet street with no intensive traffic, within a 10 minutes’ walking distance from Vasileostrovskaya Underground station.
Disposition by General Layout

The site for the hospital building project is located on the hospital grounds in the central part of the area between Maly and Sredny Prospects and 1st and 2-nd Lines of Vasilievsky Island, in a historical hospital complex.
The site is on the grounds of “letter A” group of buildings, registered by the Federal Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
The main building of Saint Mary Magdalene’s Hospital (letter A1) was constructed in 1792-93 to the design of Luigi Ruska; modelling, gilding and plafonds were designed by Carlo Scotti. The first owner of the building was Mayor I. Kousov, a wealthy merchant. The principal front faces Tuchkov Embankment. The emphasis of the modest front is on six Corinthian pilasters, which unite the two storeys of the building and support the pediment.
In 1828 the building was converted into a hospital by the architect J. Kvadri.
One should note the Mortuary building (letter L), constructed in 1834-36 by the architect P.S. Plavov, with the front facing 2-nd Line. It is a small building with a rusticated lower part and shallow niches with burial urns.
Town Planning Board designates: the function of the buildings that are constructed in the area, and the height of the buildings (maximum 24 metres).
The hospital building is designed so that the principal front and entrances will face 2-nd Line.
The building and the yard will have access for autotransport both from within the grounds of the hospital and from 2-nd Line.
The site is characterised by flat relief, levels varying within 0.2 metres.

Architectural Disposition
The building consists of 3 blocks, with different number of storeys, connected with one another, which constitute a unified architectural composition.
Block “1”: 6-storey building, with the front facing 2-nd Line, room height – 3.0 m, building height – 18 m, with the main entrance and a ramp.
Block “2”: 8-storey building (central part of the building), with a yard, room height – 3.0 m, building height – 23.5 m, with improved comfort wards on the two top storeys.
Block “3”: 5-storey building (inner part), building height – 15 m.
The architectural disposition is determined by the following: the best use of the space, insolation conditions, building regulations, preservation of the building registered by the State Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and the courtyard in the adjoining site.
The higher part of the building is equipped by Schindler company with 4 passenger lifts, each with carrying capacity of 800 kg (detailed calculations of optimum carrying capacity are provided by the manufacturer).
The fronts consist of large parts, with vast spaces of structural glazing, and are decorated with modern facing material. The aerated front is coated with large ceramic granite slabs.
Glazing is made of aluminium frames and imported low emission toned plate glass; frames are coated with electrostatic spray powder of RAL standard colour.
The building has a monolithic structure, with walls made of bricks and blocks, and a pile foundation.
